In what will be remembered as one of the top New York Class A State Championship games in recent history, The Ward Melville Patriots lacrosse team took on the Pittsford Panthers boy's lacrosse team. Looking the bounce back after a tough loss in the 2016 Class A title game, Ward Melville entered the game with only two losses on the season and ranked in the USA Top 25 while Pittsford was playing in the programs first ever state championship. For the majority of the game, the Panthers dominated play, taking a four goal lead onto the final minutes of the fourth quarter. It was then the miraculous comeback for Ward Melville began, as the Patriots scored four times in the last seventy seconds to force overtime. It was there that Ward Melville senior Matt Grillo would bury the game winner with one second to play and give Ward Melville an incredible 10-9 win.
