To open their 2017 college lacrosse season, the Hobart College Statesmen men's college lacrosse team hosted the 15th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus in Victor, New York. Heading into the 2017 college season, the Statesmen were picked to finish third in the NEC, while the Nittany Lions look to build off last years growing success and are a trending sleeper pick by many to have a solid 2017 season. The matchup also heldspecial significance for Penn State head lacrosse coach Jeff Tambroni,who was a graduate of Hobart and won two National Titles with the Statesmen in the early 90's. In what would be a high scoring affair, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a big lead heading into the second half that grew to nine at one point, but the Statesmen clawed back, cutting the deficit to only two goals by the fourth quarter. However, a 6-2 run in the final minutes by Penn State would prove to be the difference as PSU held on for a wild 21-15 win. Penn State was led by both freshman Mac O'Keefe and sophomore Nick Spillane, whoeach tallied four goals and three assists. Midfielder Justin Scott led the way for the Statesmen with four goals while goalie Jackson Brown recordedten saves. With the win, Penn State moves to 2-0 on the young season and return to University Park where they will next host Cornell, while the loss drops Hobart to 0-1 with a home game against Siena next on the docket.
