LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee used a 7-1 run across the second, third and fourth periods to defeat 19th-ranked Lynchburg by a score of 13-10 in men's lacrosse on Saturday evening at Wilson Field. The two teams were tied 5-5 with 6:24 left in the first half, but W&L (5-4, 3-0) scored three straight goals, one each from senior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate), senior midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood) and junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster), to assume an 8-5 lead with 3:05 left in the second quarter. The Hornets (4-5, 1-1) then closed the first half with a goal by senior midfielder Joey Giannaras off an assist from junior attackman Colin McGuire with 1:08 remaining to make it an 8-6 game at the break. The Generals put three goals on the board in the third period and kept the Hornets out of the goal to assume an 11-6 advantage heading into the fourth period. Griffin got the second half surge started with a goal off an assist from sophomore defender John Broderick (Manhasset, N.Y. / Chaminade) at 13:23, and Griffin then scored unassisted at 11:44. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Collins Speed (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) followed with a goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Jed Londrey (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) off the ensuing faceoff 11 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder Walker Brown (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) added a transition goal off a feed from first-year midfielder Evans Alison (Huntsville, Ala. / Randolph) 47 seconds into the fourth period to cap the 7-1 run and give W&L a 12-6 lead. Lynchburg scored four of the game's last five goals, including three tallies from Andrew Thomas, to cut it to 13-10 with 2:33 remaining. However, the Generals' defense would stiffen, as W&L picked up its third straight win and third consecutive victory over the Hornets. W&L dominated the measurables, holding a 51-29 advantage on shots and a 31-25 edge on ground balls. The Generals also won 19-of-27 faceoffs and were 23-of-24 on clears in the contest. Griffin and Dardani both finished with three goals, while sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) had one goal and three assists. First-year midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) totaled one goal and two assists, and Londrey totaled one goal and one assist. Sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien) was steady in goal, producing 13 saves in 60 minutes of action. Thomas led the Hornets with three goals, sophomore attackman Evan Lombardo notched two goals and one assist and Giannaras registered two goals. Junior C.J. Santora played the duration in goal and notched 16 saves.
