Grieves Notches Career-Highs of Two Goals, Four Assists and Six Points CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College jumped out to an 11-4 lead with 7:07 left in the fourth and withstood a five-goal rally from #15 Washington and Lee in the final 6:40 to come away with an 11-9 win in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium in the Shoremen's home opener. The Shoremen downed their first ranked team since topping #3 Stevenson on May 14, 2014 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Washington College 11 #15 Washington and Lee 9 How It Happened - Washington, who never trailed or were tied in the game, scored the first three goals of the game to lead 3-0 after the first quarter. Casey Grieves factored in all three goals in the first, scoring the final goal with 2:40 left in the quarter and assisting on scores by Brady O'Neill and Tyler Powers respectively. - After the Generals cut the lead to 3-1 just 1:39 into the second quarter on a goal by Jonathan Henry, the Shoremen scored the next two to take a 5-1 lead with 5:19 remaining in the second on a man-up tally off the stick of Kevin Trapp from Charles Walker. - A.J. Witherell trimmed the lead to 5-2 with 4:10 left, but Washington netted the final two goals of the second to take a 7-2 lead into halftime. Powers scored both of them, scoring the last on a man-up with 13 ticks left. - W&L scored the first two goals of the third to trim the WC lead to 7-4 with 9:26 to go on Witherell's second goal of the game. - Washington responded with the next four goals spanning a 10:39 stretch of the third and fourth quarters to take an 11-4 lead with 7:07 left on Trey Ritter's first career goal from Jake Whittingslow. The Shoremen took a 9-4 lead into the final quarter. - The Generals scored two goals in 40 seconds to trim the lead to 11-6 with 6:00 left on a Joe Perrella goal. - Jones Veith scored W&L's final two goals, his last tally coming with 17.3 seconds left to reduce the WC lead to 11-9. On the ensuing face-off, Josh Huerbin won the face-off and scooped up the ground ball and the Shoremen ran the clock out to come away with the win. For The Shoremen (2-0) - Grieves (game-bests of four assists and six points to go along with two goals), Powers (contest-best three goals), Sloan (one goal and two helpers), Barbieri (two goals and four ground balls), Walker (personal-best two assists), O'Neill and Ritter (one goal and one assist). - In Goal: Ben Flood (60:00, nine goals allowed, nine saves) - Washington was 15-for-18 in clears in the contest and was 3-for-5 on the man-up. - Carson Metzker was 5-for-13 on face-offs, while Huerbin was 4-for-11 as the Shoremen were 9-for-24 at the X. - Sam Cloud scooped up a career-high five ground balls for WC. For #15 Washington and Lee (2-2) - Veith (team-best four points on two goals and two assists), Henry and Witherell (two goals and one assist), Perrella (one goal and two assists) - In Goal: Nic Peterson (60:00, 11 goals allowed, five saves) - Witherell had six ground balls to lead all players as W&L held a 37-29 edge in ground balls in the game. - The Generals were 8-for-13 in clears, 2-for-3 in man-up situations and turned it over 17 times. - Washington and Lee won 15 of the 24 face-offs in the game with Jack Hodgson going 15-for-23. - The guests outshot the hosts, 33-27. Notes - Today was the 60th all-time meeting between Washington College and W&L with WC holding a 34-26 advantage in the all-time series. The Shoremen have played the Generals more than anybody else in program history as the series started in 1950. - Grieves was named the Goose Nation TV Shoremen Player of the Game during the webcast of the game. - Shoremen notch their first win over the Generals since 2014 when the then #8 Shoremen topped the then #15 Generals in Lexington, Va. by a 15-8 score. - WC had an assist on all 11 goals in the victory.
