Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Braswell entered the No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team's NCAA Tournament game against unranked Springfield College with 11:31 remaining in the third quarter and the Ducks trailing 9-4, and proceeded to blank the Pride for the rest of the game as the Ducks completed an incredible comeback to win 10-9 in overtime on Wednesday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. Braswell made five saves, faced 12 shots and turned away them all in an incredible performance off the bench. He had played less than 100 minutes this year before Wednesday's game. Ryan Gebhardt scored the game-winning goal for the Ducks 1:17 into the extra period, going to the ground in the process in a Bobby Orr-ian exclamation point on an epic Duck victory as the rest of his mates mobbed field in celebration. Click here to watch footage of the game-winner Back at the beginning of the game, Stevens scored twice in less than a minute to open the scoring. John Boutureira assisted Brendan Monteleone on the first and Gebardt made a pretty move to net an unassisted goal at 9:53. Springfield was held without a shot for the first seven minutes, but Duncan Preston's volley found pay dirt at 7:43 to cut the Duck lead in half. Stevens went up 3-1 on an unassisted goal by Boutureira, but the Pride countered with late goals at 1:44 and 0:26 on the clock to knot the game up at the end of the first. Led by goaltender Jake Reynolds and his five saves, the Pride pitched a shutout in the second quarter. The visitors also scored four times, taking a 7-3 lead into the locker room. Preston had two goals in the first half, and a quintet of Pride members added one goal each for Springfield. The Ducks began the second half with 17 seconds remaining on a penalty and wasted little time ending their scoreless streak; Max Bailey fed Tommy Dawson for a goal at 14:47 of the third period. Eric Radbourne scored a huge goal at the end of the third period. With just 14 seconds on the board, he ripped a shot from the left side that cut the lead down to two, the closest the Ducks had been since the 9:59 mark of the second period. Springfield picked up a penalty in the final two seconds of the third, and the Ducks scored on the ensuing extra-man opportunity as Bailey and Monteleone hooked up to make it a one-goal game. Two minutes later, Dawson completed the comeback with a twisting, jump shot from the top that found the back of the net. The Ducks scored five in a row to erase the 9-4 deficit. Also key in that run was faceoff man Nicholas Carnovale, who won 5-of-6 draws in that stretch. Carnovale and Joseph Cameron dueled for a one-minute-and-15-second faceoff in the third quarter, finally won by Stevens on a violation that ignited the Ducks' rally. Bryan Rogers had the first goal of the 11-minute run at 8:40 of the third. Neither team scored in the final 12:38 of regulation, a tense time filled with missed shots, penalties and scrums which befitted a matchup of two evenly-matched teams. Carnovale won the faceoff to start the overtime period, with Jason Coyle scooping the ball off the turf for the Ducks. Stevens called a timeout to set up the offense; Gebhardt took a shot that was saved, but Monteleone grabbed the loose ball to give Gebhardt another chance, which the freshman capitalized on. "I was proud of how our guys fought in the second half! We just grinded and made big plays on both ends of the field," said head coach Gene Peluso. "We loved the boost we got from Braswell. I love how Carnovale played at the x. He had some great wing play and kept the ball our way." "The plays that Monteleone made today were exceptional," Peluso continued. He got us the huge possession in the OT that led to a great goal by Gebhardt. The defense settled in and did a great job against a great Springfield team. We are excited to be moving forward. " Gebhardt finished with a hat trick to lead the Ducks in scoring Bailey handed out three assists in the game Carnovale finished with four GB's and Bubba Brennan added three Brennan and Daniel Crotty both caused a pair of turnovers Up Next The Ducks will move on to take on nation No. 1 Rochester Institute of Technology in the Round of 16 on Saturday, May 12 at Tiger Stadium in Rochester, New York. RIT defeated New England College 26-3 earlier on Wednesday to move on to the Round of 16. More information will be available in the coming days.
