Junior Benner Geurtsen and freshman Will Iorio combined for 13 points as Coast Guard punched their ticket to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship by topping MIT 17-9 Wednesday evening. With the win, the Bears improve to 14-3 while the Engineers finish the season 8-8. Geurtsen finished with four goals and three assists while Iorio had three goals and three assists. Senior Matt Huemme also netted a hat trick while junior Anthony Wyler, sophomore Riley McNulty and freshman Conor Rowan each finished with two goals and one assist. Senior Graham Davis finished with a team high five points scoring four goals and dishing out one assist. Freshman Mark Heatzig netted two goals while sophomore Jack Strachan and senior Mitch Turley each finished with a goal and an assist. MIT jumped out to an early lead as Davis and Strachan each scored in the opening 3:30 for the 2-0 lead. Coast Guard answered in a big way scoring five straight goals capped off by a Huemme score with 9:07 remaining in the second quarter. The Engineers closed within one to end the first half as Davis scored back-to-back goals including a quick transition tally with 3:13 remaining in the second period making the score 5-4. In the third quarter, the Bears pushed their lead to five with five different goal scorers in the period. Both Wyler and Iorio had a goal and assist over this stretch making the score 10-5. After Coast Guard opened up the fourth quarter with a Wyler goal, MIT responded with three straight goals to pull within three at 11-8 with 9:05 remaining. The Bears however slammed the door on the game scoring six straight goals including three tallies in 45 seconds for their first playoff win in program history, 17-9. Junior Trey Johnson (13-3) made five saves allowing nine goals in his first playoff start. Sophomore Charles McAllister finished up the final minutes in goal, making one save. Junior Victor Fink (6-5) made eight saves allowing 17 goals in the loss. Junior Colin Cashin was dominant at the face-off winning 20-28 and picking up a game high 10 ground balls. The Bears finished with 12 caused turnovers with freshman Justin Edwards leading the way with four caused and five ground balls. Coast Guard will host the Springfield Pride this Saturday, May 5thin the NEWMAC Championship. Opening face-off is 1:00 pm.
