The Springfield College men's lacrosse erupted for five second-quarter goals to break open a close game and the Pride held on to take a 10-8 victory over Nazareth in the 2018 season opener for both teams. The Golden Flyers staged an impressive second-half comeback with four goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth, but the Pride prevailed behind two goals each from Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.). Springfield had a decisive 12-3 shooting advantage in the first quarter, and scored the first two goals of the game off markers from Hawley and Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) just 1:10 apart with 8:41 remaining. After surrendering a goal with 35 seconds left in the first, it was all Springfield in the second quarter with two of its five goals coming off extra-man opportunities. Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored unassisted to make the score 3-1, then the Pride scored the next four in a span of 2:28 to take a 7-1 lead into halftime as Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.), Hawley, Habich, and Cole Pecora (North Haven, Conn.) all found the back of the cage. Nazareth was able to close within 10-5 after three quarters, and the Golden Flyers' momentum carried into the fourth quarter, as it produced two goals in the opening 4:58 to make it a 10-7 game. However, despite being outshot 16-4 in the quarter, Springfield was able to hold on for the 10-8 victory. Springfield had a 42-32 advantage in shots overall, while Nazareth won 11 of the 20 face-offs. Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) went the distance for Springfield between the pipes and made 10 saves, while Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Hawley finished with a team-best four points, while Hurley and Jack Vail (Fraklin, Mass.) each had three points, including a pair of assists each. The Pride's next test will come on Saturday when it travels to New Jersey to face No. 19 Stevens at 1 pm.
