The Williams College Ephs (4-3/3-1 NESCAC) defeated the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers (4-3) 12-7 in today's match-up on Washburn Field on the campus of Colorado College. With 6:09 to go in the third quarter, MIT forced a turnover near midfield, got the ball to attackman Graham Davis whose shot was deflected by junior defenseman Jake Schuckman whojumped into the goal crease while Eph goalie George Peele had vacated in search of a replacement stick. This would be the play that determined the final twenty minutes in the game, which resulted in five unanswered goals for the Ephs and securing a Williams win. The MIT Engineers took control of the opening quarter by a face-off win to lead to the first scoring possession of the day by Mark Heattzig off of a fade-away shot. Less than a minute later, the Engineers scored their second unanswered goal by midfielder Graham Davis. At 9:15, Williams was able to score their first goal of the day when sophomore Brendan Hoffman put one in the back of the net for the Ephs. After a turnover, MIT on a fast break found a goal by Graham Davis (his second of the day). On the following face off, Williams was able to gain possession and Cory Lund scored for the Ephs off of a doge from below goal ine extended. making it just a 3-2 ball game. Great defense was displayed by both teams and the second quarter remained scoreless until 8:32 when Kevin Stump ripped one from more than fifteen yards out on a man-up opportunity. The score for the first time was tied, 3-3. This was soon to be broken a minute later off of an Engineer goal score by Gavin Vandenberg. The Ephs soon tied up the score at 4-4 with another goal by Brendan Hoffman. MIT broke the tie with a score by Nicolas Gianni with just six minutes remaining in the first half. MIT with another man-up opportunity scored again at 4:28. The goal by Graham Davis increase the engineers' lead to two scores. The score at the end of the first half was MIT 6 – Williams 4. Williams came out in the second half with a surge of momentum, translating to a possession that afforded a goal within the first three minutes by sophomore Brendan Hoffman. At 10:27, MIT was able to re-gain the two-score lead with a crease-cranker from Graham Davis. Williams one minute later matched the goal with a shot from the crease as well, with Cory Lund netting his second of the day. With five minutes left in the quarter, a thirty second penalty was called on the Engineers for holding and the Ephs capitalized on the opportunity with a goal from Kevin Stump to tie the game up at 7-7. In the final minute of the quarter, Cory Lund gave the Ephs an 8-7 lead when he picked off a pass just short of midfield and shot the ball into the net from 35 yards out before the MIT goalie could return to the crease after generating a clear attmept by the Engineers. The Ephs never relinquished the lead. The Ephs set the tone for the fourth quarter with a score from Kevin Stump unassisted off of a shot from the wing to bring the Eph lead to two goals, 9-7. Two minutes later, Kevin Stump found another goal on a feed from Jared Strauss to bring the score to 10-7. At 2:43, Kevin Stump scored yet another goal and he was assisted by Cory Lund. Less than a minute later, Lund would get his opportunity to score again, giving the Ephs a 12–7 win. Eph goalie George Peele played the entire game and made 12 saves. The Engineers also used one goalie this game, Alexander Lynch, who made 9 saves. MIT was led by Graham Davis with four goals. The Ephs were led by Kevin Stump with five goals, freshman Cory Lund with four goals (and one assist) and Brendan Hoffman with three goals. Eph head coach George McCormack stated, "We had a slow start against a well-coached team that lead to a tough first half. The guys really rallied and played much better and as a team in the second half". The Ephs return to action this coming Friday when they take on Colorado College at 1pm. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers will next play at Wheaton College on Saturday at 4pm.
