Four different Mariners recorded three-plus points to lead the USMMA men's lacrosse team to an 18-12 road victory over MIT up in Massachusetts on Sunday in both teams' 2018 season-opener. Senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led all players in the contest with eight points on five goals and three assists, while classmate Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) found the back of the net a game-high six times. Sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists and junior Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) added three points on two tallies and one helper. Junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) also had a multi-point day as he contributed a goal and an assist, while two other Mariners found the back of the net once each – senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman MacLean Keene-Connole (Middletown, R.I.) – and freshman Kyle Orton (Lewes, Del.), added an assist. Freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) earned the victory between the pipes in his first collegiate contest, as he played 52 minutes and made 12 saves to go along with five groundballs. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) made one stop while playing the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Fellow freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won a game-best 16 faceoffs on 27 tries and also picked up a game-best eight GBs, while classmate Michael Zurlo (Millersville, Md.) won five of the six faceoffs he took. On defense, sophomore Nick Vinberg (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scooped up five groundballs and led all players in the game with three caused turnovers. The Mariners began the day with back-to-back goals before the Engineers cut the lead in half at 10:43 of the first quarter. Merchant Marine went on to score the next seven goals over the next 15-plus minutes to take a commanding 9-1 advantage and led 10-3 into the halftime break. MIT stormed right back to within just three goals after scoring five of the first six tallies of the third quarter to make the score 11-8 in favor of the Mariners with 2:43 to play in the third. However, USMMA scored four-straight in the next four-plus minutes of action to take a 15-8 lead at 12:54 of the final quarter. The Engineers fought back to within five goals on two separate occasions over the next 11 minutes, but that was the closest they would come, as the Mariners held on for the 18-12 win. Merchant Marine ended the day with a 53-46 advantage in shots, including a 21-5 margin in the first quarter. The Mariners also had the upperhand in groundballs, 42-34, and won 22-of-34 faceoffs. Three players recorded four points apiece for MIT – senior Graham Davis had three goals and an assists, while classmate Mitch Turley and freshman Nicolas Gianni both had two goals and two assists each. Junior goalie Alexander Lynch suffered the loss after making 16 saves throughout the entirety of the game and sophomore Joseph Vasile won a team-best six faceoffs on 13 tries. Up next, the Mariners will travel down to Buena Vista, Va., to take on Southern Virginia (4-1) on Wednesday, March 7. Opening faceoff against the Knights is scheduled for 7 p.m. at SVU's Knight Stadium.
