The Springfield College men's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-4 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field. With the win, the Pride is now 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Buccaneers fall to 5-4 on the year with an 0-3 mark against NEWMAC opponents. Springfield College owned a 36-29 advantage in shots over 60 minutes of play, while it also won the ground ball battle, 42-30. In net, Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) got the nod and made a pair of saves in the first half, before getting relieved by Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.), who came on in the second half and registered a career-high 10 saves for the Pride. At the face-off "x", Noah Rouleau (Saint Albans, Vt.) was impressive as he went 7-for-8 with four ground balls, while Matt D'Andrea (Cheshire, Conn.) was 7-for-13 with three ground balls. Offensively, the Pride was led by Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.), who posted six points on four goals and two assists, while Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) and Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) each had three points with a goal and two helpers. Senior defender Anthony Febbo (Yonkers, N.Y.) caused three turnovers in the defensive end and had one ground ball, while Connor Eschmann (Wrentham, Mass.) picked up a team-best five ground balls. Senior midfielder Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored the game's first goal just 1:16 into the game on a feed from Hurley, sparking a five-goal quarter, which also had strikes from Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.), Vail, Hurley and Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine), giving the Pride a 5-0 lead after one. Springfield College continued to roll in the second frame as Hurley scored back-to-back goals just seven seconds apart to make it 7-0, before Preston, Chris Cunnington (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Hawley found the back of the net to make it 10-0 with 7:04 to play in the first half. From there, Pecora would score two unanswered goals to give the Pride a 12-0 lead at the break. Hurley and Manny Medoza (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) capitalized on chances to open the second half before the Buccaneers got on the board when Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass.) struck at the 11:15 mark, making it 14-1, Pride. From there, Allen finished a feed from Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) to make it 15-1, before Mass Maritime ended the third quarter on a tally from Avakian to make it 15-2. Heading into the fourth, Ben Shea (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) buried a feed from Justin Schneider (Norwalk, Conn.), before Mendoza, Schneider and Matt Huggett (Greenfield, Mass.) pushed the Pride's advantage to 19-3. Mass Maritime was able to find the back of the net on a man-up advantage with 1:01 to play, but the Pride gained control of the ball and sealed the 19-4 win. Springfield College will now focus its attention on the Coast Guard Academy, as the Pride makes the trip to New London, Conn. on Wednesday, April 18 for a 7 p.m. clash with the Bears.
