Score: MIT 14, Massachusetts Maritime Academy 5 - Records: MIT (6-4 ,2-1 NEWMAC); Massachusetts Maritime (4-3, 0-2 NEWMAC) - Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium) - The Lead: Seven unanswered goals during the second quarter helped MIT pull away and eventually capture a 14-5 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) racked up four goals and three assists for the Engineers while Edward Powers paced the Buccaneers with one goal and two assists. HOW IT HAPPENED: - Senior Jack Kelly (Milford, Del.) provided the first two goals of the game at the 11:41 and 5:53 marks as freshman Nicolas Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) increased MIT's lead 26 seconds later. Massachusetts Maritime ended the shutout courtesy of a man-up goal from Franklin Ragge that was set up by Powers with 4:10 on the clock. Powers then found Trey Guerrini with eight ticks left, helping the Buccaneers narrow the gap to 3-2. - A solo effort by Davis exactly 1:03 into the second stanza kicked off the Engineers' pivotal 7-0 run. Freshman Luke Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) won the ensuing faceoff and set up Nicolas Gianni for the goal in a span of six seconds. Davis was a factor in MIT's next four goals as he earned an assist on blast by junior Jacob Stein (Vienna, Va.) and then tallied three goals in a row. Junior Carter Morgan (Locust Valley, N.Y.) capped off the frame with an unassisted strike with 46 seconds remaining. - Powers ended the visitors' scoring drought when he connected on pass from Alexandre Lucas at the 13:10 mark of the third quarter. Sophomore Jack Strachan (Moresville, N.C.) quickly increased the Engineers' margin to 11-3 when Luke Gianni won the faceoff and dished the ball off to Nicolas Gianni who found Strachan for the score. Samuel Hastings countered with a solo blast with just under 11 minutes remaining, but Strachan recorded back-to-back goals, completing the hat trick and giving MIT a 13-4 advantage. - In a back-and-forth final frame, both squads registered a goal. Kenneth Parnell did the honors for Massachusetts Maritime after 1:03 expired while Morgan capped the scoring with 6:46 left to play. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - Strachan finished with three goals and an assist while Nicolas Gianni posted two goals and an assist.
