The Coast Guard men's lacrosse team topped Mitchell 20-2 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field. With the win the Bears improve to 6-3 on the season while the Mariners fall to 1-6 overall. Coast Guard was led by sophomore Benner Geurtsen who had a game high six points with three goals and three assists. Freshman Tyler Grills had a career best five points with three goals and two assists while freshman Riley McNulty and sophomore Ian Logan each netted a hat trick. Sophomore Anthony Wyler notched four points with two goals and two assists while freshman Logan Morin tallied his first two collegiate points with a goal and an assist. McNulty is third in the NEWMAC in both goals (20) and points (34), while Geurtsen is second in the conference with 16 assists. McNulty is approaching the individual single season point record set by Louis DePaolis last season (34) while Geurtsen has already past the record for assists set in a season set by teammate Ian Logan last year. Kyle Marsh did all the damage for the Mariners scoring both of the teams goals. The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first half led by goals from McNulty (3), Logan (2) and Geurtsen (2). Coast Guard scored 10 more goals in the second only allowing the two as the team set a single game record for goals with 20. The Bears defense had a season high 12 caused turnovers with freshman Justin Edwards (2), junior Alec Groff (2) and sophomore Connor Ellis (2) leading the way. Coast Guard also picked up 47 ground balls which is fourth most in program history as Geurtsen led the way with five. Sophomore Trey Johnson (6-3) got the start in goal playing the first quarter and facing zero shots. Freshman Charles McAllister played the second and third quarters allowing two goals on five shot and making three saves. Sophomore Connor Hoehle finished up the game matching Johnson with zero saves on zero shots faced. JD LeMay (1-6) made 19 saves on 39 shots and allowing 20 goals. Coast Guard is back in action this weekend when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for their second NEWMAC game of the season against the Clark Cougars. Opening face-off is 7:00.
