The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team had a tough game Wednesday night against the visiting Huntingdon Hawks. The Stormy Petrels fell behind early in the game and were not able to fight their way back, falling to the Hawks 19-4. This brings the Petrels to 0-4 for the season. The Hawks came out with a 15-0 run through the course of the first three periods before the Petrels could get on the board. Freshman attackman Braden Draucek put the Petrels on the board with just eight minutes left in the third period when he slipped into the slot and beat the Huntingdon goalie, bringing the score to 15-1. The Hawks answered with a 4-0 run, making the score 19-1 at the end of the third. In the fourth period, the Petrels got more going offensively and went on a 3-0 run. They recorded goals from freshman midfielder Cameron Ritter, Draucek and sophomore midfielder Tyler Stridiron. This brought the score to 19-4 for the night. Draucek got a feed from sophomore attackman Nathaniel Gillespie for his goal and Stridiron's went as a man-up goal on the team's only extra-man opportunity of the game. In addition to his 2 goals, Draucek scooped up two ground balls. Sophomore defender Andrew Kwapil scooped of 5 ground balls of his own. Freshman goalie Sean Merritt added 16 saves on the evening. Altogether, Huntingdon outshot Oglethorpe 46-22, recovered 39 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 13, and committed 15 turnovers to Oglethorpe's 19. Six penalties were committed throughout the game, five from the Petrels. Huntingdon was 3-for-5 on extra-man opportunities. Oglethorpe did prove successful on 16 of 22 clear attempts. "This was a tough game for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young. "We have a bunch of road games coming up, so we'll have to focus as we head into those contests." "On a side note, I would like to thank Union Grove High School for coming out and supporting our program today," Young continued. "And I wish them they best of luck on their upcoming season." The Petrels will travel to Demorest to face the homestanding Piedmont Lions Sunday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Mount Berry to go against SAA opponent Berry. Oglethorpe takes on the Vikings March 1 at 6 p.m.
