(Rotch Field) Date: Friday, March 30, 2018 The Lead: Junior Cameron Radenberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Austin Franklin each found the back of the net twice for the Emerson men's lacrosse team in their opening NEWMAC setback to the Springfield Pride on Friday night. INSIDE THE NUMBERS Both Radenberg and Franklin paced the Lions with a pair of goals with freshmen Tim Doyle (San Diego, Calif.) and Stevie Powers (Arlington, Mass.) also tallying nets. Along with his two goals, Radenberg was also credited with an assist. Sophomore Austin DiPietro paced the defense with 14 ground ball pickups while four Lions caused one turnover each. DiPietro anchored both sides in the face-off circle and won 18-of-27. In his first start in net, freshman Lucas Sickner (Malibu, Calif.) came away with six saves through the full 60. Ray McCarthy led all scorers with four goals and both Ben Shea and Joseph Cameron were credited two assists each. Matt D'Andrea had four ground ball pick ups and JT Kapnis caused a pair of turnovers, while Cameron finished 10-of-18 in the X, D'Andrea won 8-of-13 and Noah Rouleau won 2-of-7. Emerson held the advantage in ground balls (37-32) and finished 1-of-3 on the man-up advantage while going a perfect 10-for-10 in clears. Springfield topped Emerson with a 49-24 shot advantage, as well as the advantage in the X (20-18) while they finished 14-for-15 in successful clears. HOW IT HAPPENED Tom Hurley put in his first of two first quarter goals 57 seconds into the start of the game to give Springfield the 1-0 lead until Powers evened the score just over a minute later. Springfield went on to cash in the next four goals from Tommy Nash, Matt Allen, Cole Pecora and Hurley's second with the Pride now holding a four goal lead at 5-1. Radenberg's net with 3:46 in the frame broke up the visitors scoring spurt and put Emerson with a trio at 5-2 before the Lucas Habich tacked on the Pride's sixth goal at 2:11 to give them the 6-2 edge. 47 seconds into the second stanza, Joe Hawley pushed Springfield's cushion up to six (8-2) as Franklin snuck one by Reynolds (8-3) with 13:21 to play in the half. Starting at 13:16 on a net from McCarthy, Springfield was able to hold Emerson scoreless and connected for the half's next five goals as the Pride extended its lead into double figures at 10 (13-3). McCarthy connected for his second marker 42 seconds into the second half to give the visitors a lengthy 12-goal cushion only to be answered with Franklin's second goal on a man-up, Emerson's first since 13:21 of the second quarter (14-4). Springfield tacked on another pair of goals to bring its lead to 12 (16-4) that was followed up by Emerson's last two tallies from Radenberg and Doyle with the score at 16-6. Within the fourth quarter, Emerson was held scoreless through 15 minutes thus allowing Springfield to tack on 11 goals in the stanza to close out the 28-6 win.
