The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team closed out the 2017 season on a high note Saturday evening when they defeated the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers, 9-7, in true comeback fashion during the fourth quarter to close out New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition. Wheaton (6-9) senior Will Morrison, sophomore CJ Leighton and sophomore Alex Stomberg each posted two goals on the day while senior Graydon Cook, senior Zach Brode and sophomore Liam Pearson each tallied one. Mass. Maritime's (4-9) Kevin Collins and Patrick Kearney led the team with two goals apiece as Benjamin Avakian, Zack O'Brien and Keaghan Bartley each recorded one. The Lyons opened the match with a goal by Cook to jump start the game. Wheaton quickly tallied another goal by Morrison before the Buccaneers were able to respond. It was the battle of the offense for the remainder of the game as Wheaton entered halftime ahead, 5-4. In the third quarter, Mass. Maritime collected three unanswered goals coming from Kearney, O'Brien and Avakian to gain the 7-5 lead. Wheaton wouldn't be able to respond until the end of the quarter when Stomberg and Brode each took advantage of being a man up, giving the momentum back to Wheaton and tying it at seven. Pearson would go on to record Wheaton's game-winning goal halfway through the fourth quarter as Stomberg tabbed an insurance goal with five minutes remaining to help seal the 9-7 victory for the Lyons and shut down the Buccaneers. Wheaton junior goalkeeper Joey Mitchell (2-1) earned the win for the Lyons while registering nine saves as Mass. Maritime goalkeeper Michael Dolan earned 13. Mass. Maritime held the 17-13 advantage on ground balls while Wheaton held the 51-37 mark on shots. The Lyons conclude the 2017 season 6-9 overall and 2-5 in NEWMAC play.
