Freshman Ethan Garland scored a career-high six goals while sophomore Cameron Link had a career-high 17 saves as the Rhodes College men's lacrosse avenged last season's heartbreaking losses to Birmingham-Southern with a dominant 17-9 victory. The Lynx out shot the Panthers 42-40 while Rhodes forced BSC into 21 turnovers and only 11 of 17 in clear attempts. The Lynx picked up 35 ground balls and won 10 face offs on the evening. The Panthres got an early goal for the 1-0 lead, but Rhodes, in front of a raucous crowd at Crain Field, rattled off six straight goals in the quarter to send their home crowd into a frenzy. Junior Ryan Fennelly got the scoring started to even the game before Garland completely took over the match, scoring three straight goals to make it a 4-1 game. Junior Tommy Reingruber and sophomore John Tooher added goals at the end of the period to make it a 6-1 game at the end of one. Garland scored goal number four to start the second quarter, marking seven straight goals for the Lynx and a 7-1 lead. BSC got one back in the 2nd before Rhodes closed the half with three more goals from Tooher, Fennelly, and Garland to take a commanding 10-2 lead into the break. Goals from Fennelly and Garland pushed the lead out to 12-3 in the third before the Panthers went on a mini-run to cut the deficit to 12-6. Sophomore Tyler Milwit answered with a huge goal before the Panthers closed the quarter with their fifth goal of the period to make it 13-7. The Lynx regained control and closed the match out with four goals in the period as back-to-back goals from sophomore David Perez and freshman David Jones pushed the lead back out to 15-7. Fennelly and senior Matthew Jones added goals for good measure for the 17-9 victory. Garland had the big game on Saturday while Fennelly continued his monster year, scoring four goals in the game. Tooher finished with two goals and two assists while Jones had a goal and assist. Juniors Justin Powers and Steven Yowan each had an assist in the game. Defensively, Garland and sophomore Henry Hasbrouck each had two caused turnovers while senior Mike Knudsen and freshman James Margraff each had four ground balls. Senior John Wancowicz and freshman J.J. Hoots had three ground balls while Tooher and sophomore Matthew Simon had two. Link was outstanding in goal all evening, finishing with a career-high 17 saves. Link especially made some big saves late in the fourth quarter to bury any Panther momentum in terms of a comeback. Rhodes moves to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in SAA play. They prepare to begin a three game road stand beginning with a tough two game trip this upcoming weekend as they head to Oglethorpe on Friday for a 4 PM ET matchup.
