Virginia Beach, Calif. - March 15, 2018 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team used a 9-1 burst in the first half to race past Cortland, 15-11, at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex. Competing against the Red Dragons for the second-straight year in Virginia Beach as part of their annual spring break trip, the Pride picked up their first win over Cortland since 2000. The Red Dragons entered the game ranked sixth in the nation according to the latest USILA National Coaches Poll and now stand at 3-2 on the year. Springfield has now won its last two outings to improve to 3-2 on the campaign. In a game where Springfield only committed six turnovers, Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) was dominant offensively with six points on four goals and two assists. Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine), Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.), Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.), and Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) each tallied two goals and Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) won 16 face-offs and picked up eight ground balls. Between the pipes, Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) was credited with 12 saves as the Pride held Cortland to 0-for-3 on man-up opportunities. After allowing the game's first three goals in the opening 3:12, Springfield responded with seven-straight goals over the next 11-plus minutes to take a 7-3 cushion. Vail got the scoring going with an unassisted goal at 10:46 before Nash, Anthony Sullivan (Westfield, Mass.), Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.), and Habich scored in a 1:54 burst. Springfield would head into the half with a 10-5 advantage following Vail's third strike of the game with 1:19 left in the second quarter. The Pride outscored Cortland 4-2 in the quarter, despite being outshot by a 14-8 margin. Cortland pumped in the first three goals of the second half to make it a 10-8 contest, only to have Hurley produced a pair of goals as part of a 3-1 Springfield run which gave the Pride a 13-9 cushion with 12:30 remaining in regulation. The teams would trade a pair of goals down the stretch, with Preston putting the finishing touches on the win with an unassisted goal with 30 ticks on the clock. Springfield will head back north for a showdown with Endicott on Sunday at 1 pm.
