Score: MIT 16, Clark University 9 - Records: MIT (8-7, 4-3 NEWMAC), Clark University (8-7, 3-4 NEWMAC) - Location: Cambridge, Mass. (Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium) - The Lead: The MIT men's lacrosse team earned a spot as the fourth-seed in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament with a 16-9 NEWMAC win over Clark University on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge. Prior to the start of today's game, the Engineers honored their six seniors Christian Jamison (Huntington, N.Y.), Jack Kelly (Milford, Del.), Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.), David Klee (East Greenbush, N.Y.), Mitch Turley (Westfield, Ind.) and Nick Martin (Mason, Ohio). Not only did the Engineers secure a spot in the playoffs, Davis tied the single season goals record that has been in the MIT record books since 1969. Davis matched Jack Anderson's record as he now has 48 goals this season with at least one more game to break it. HOW IT HAPPENED: - The Engineers opened the scoring with back-to-back goals that came just 14-seconds apart as Turley registered the game's first goal off a feed by Jack Strachan (Moresville, N.C.) at 13:43 and freshman Luke Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) doubled MIT's lead with an unassisted marker at 13:29. - Leading 3-2 after one, MIT outscored Clark, 5-1, in the second to extend its lead to 8-3 at the break. In the second, the Engineers received two goals by Davis and one by each of Turley, Nicolas Gianni (Henderson, Nev.) and Mark Heatzig (Boca Raton, Fla.). During the second, freshman Eric Pence (Portland, Ore.) notched his first collegiate assist on Davis' second goal of the stanza. - Clark outscored MIT, 3-1, in the third to cut its deficit to three at 9-6, but the Engineers put seven on the board in the final quarter to secure the win 16-9 and secure a spot in the NEWMAC postseason tournament for the fifth straight season. - In the fourth quarter run, L. Gianni and Dylan Marlborough (Cutchogue, N.Y.) scored right off their respective face-offs to begin the spurt. Additionally, sophomore Robert DeLaus (Andover, Mass.) tallied his first collegiate goal and point which came as MIT's 13th goal of the game. The Cougars got as close as five (14-9) after three straight goals, but the Engineers answered with back-to-back goals by Turley and Marlborough to end the game and give MIT the victory by a 16-9 final. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: - Offensively, Davis and Turley led the Engineers as both registered hat tricks, their 12th and second of the spring, respectively. MIT also got two goals apiece from L. Gianni, N.Gianni and Marlborough in the balanced effort. Clark's Chris Rosco powered the visitor's offense with his team-high three goals today. - On the defensive side of the ball, MIT's L. Gianni scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls, while Jamison tallied a pair of caused turnovers for the Engineers. In net, Victor Fink (Haverford, Pa.) stopped the ball 14 times to improve to 6-4 for MIT, while Clark's Thomas Berzok was handed his first loss of the spring (0-1) with 2-0 saves between the pipes. - MIT won 22-of-29 face-offs thanks to 16 victories at the X by L. Gianni (16-for-22), a 5-for-6 performance by Marlborough and a 1-for-1 day by Joseph Vasile (Webster, N.Y.). - As a team, MIT scooped up a season-high 48 ground balls and went 10-for-15 in clearing attempt, while Clark registered 29 ground balls and was 19-for-24 on clears. UP NEXT: - The Engineers will have to wait until the NEWMAC releases the postseason bracket to see where they are headed for the semifinals on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. MIT will travel to Coast Guard, Babson or Springfield, which were all tied for first place in the league with a 6-1 record.
