Junior Benner Geurtsen (Rodman, N.Y.) finished with two goals and two assists to help the visiting Coast Guard Academy defeat Babson College, 8-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. Babson, which saw its six-game winning streak come to end, closes the regular season at 9-6 overall and 6-1 in league play, while Coast Guard improves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the NEWMAC. The teams finished in a three-way tie atop the conference standings with Springfield and the seeds will be determined with a coin flip on Saturday night. Sophomore Riley McNulty (Annapolis, Md.) had a goal and two assists, while senior Matt Huemme (Sherborn, Mass.), junior Anthony Wyler (Fulton, Md.) and first-year Will Iorio (Weaver, N.C.) all contributed a goal and an assist for the Bears. Junior Colin Cashin (Bedford, N.H.) won 11-of-18 face-offs and scooped up seven ground balls, sophomore Justin Edwards (Jarrettsville, Md.) caused three turnovers, and junior Trey Johnson (Millersville, Md.) made 10 saves in the win. Sophomore Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) scored twice, while senior Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.), junior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and first-years Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Jack Tague (Fairfield, Conn.) all had one goal for the Beavers. First-year Quinn Schomp (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with four ground ball and three caused turnovers and sophomore Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made nine saves. Allen and Mishkind gave the Green and White a 2-1 lead at the end of one, but Coast Guard all four of the goals in the second quarter to build a 5-2 advantage at the break. McNulty had a goal and an assist in the frame, and the Bears won 4-of-5 face-offs while forcing six Babson turnovers. Maloney went coast-to-coast to pull the Beavers within 5-3 less than two minutes into the third, but Iorio pushed the Coast Guard advantage back to 6-3 with his tally at the 1:26 mark of frame. Allen answered off a face-off win 11 seconds later and Tague scored his first collegiate goal off the opening face-off the fourth quarter to pull the hosts within 6-5 with 14:42 remaining. The Bears won each of the next two face-offs and got goals from Huemme and Geurtsen a little more than 90 seconds apart to regain a three-goal advantage with 11:53 to go. The Green and White got as close as two on O'Hanlon's marker with 8:04 left, but was unable to put a shot on frame the rest of the way. The Beavers' best scoring chance in the waning minutes came from Dillon, who hit the pipe with 1:35 remaining. Both teams will return to action on Wednesday in NEWMAC Tournament semifinal action. Game times will be announced later on Saturday
